Cleanable wins MIRA Award for Most Inclusive Business Practices
It was cause for celebration when news broke that WCIG’s Social Enterprise. Cleanable Property Maintenance Services, had won a MIRA Award for Most Inclusive Business Practices. Created by Maribyrnong City Council, the inaugural MIRA Awards recognise the achievements of businesses, groups and individuals that contribute to improving the quality of life for people with a disability in the City of Maribyrnong.
Hosted on 3 December 2010 as part of Maribyrnong City Council’s annual celebration for International Day of People with a Disability, the Inaugural MIRA Awards brought together many local leaders and business representatives who work tirelessly to create a more inclusive community for all. With so many deserving nominees it was with great pride that Manager of Cleanable Peter Couch accepted the award for Most Inclusive Business Practices.
“I was honoured to accept this award, as a team we have worked very hard to maintain sustainable work for people living with mental illness. Cleanable is a true representation of inclusion, supporting the employment needs of disadvantaged people and providing a quality service. All my employees were extremely excited and thank Maribyrnong Council for supporting us” he said.
Presenting the award was the then Mayor of the City of Maribyrnong and Chair of the Disability Advisory Committee, Cr Sel Sanli. Cr Sanli praised Cleanable for its significant contribution to the wellbeing of the Maribyrnong Community, “Cleanable is the perfect advocate for more inclusive business practices, a shining example that such practices can be built into the operations of a highly successful business model. I commend Cleanable for the difference that is making in the lives of people with a mental disability and in the lives of their families and the broader community,” he said.
Established by WCIG in 2005, Cleanable was among the first social enterprises to emerge in Victoria with an integrated workforce that comprises 25% of staff with a mental illness. Located in Seddon, in Melbourne’s inner west, Cleanable’s offering of commercial cleaning services has grown to include domestic cleaning and office and home maintenance.
